The specialized art of surface decoration seen in traditional Chinese vessels and implements has always been an integral feature of Buddhist wood sculpture. Raw lacquering and coloring are the two most outstanding surface decorative techniques in wood statues. The works on display before us may appear thinly adorned, whereas in fact the decorations were the result of multiple procedures and a handicraft tradition requiring a very high standard of craftsmanship. Every round of coating, polishing, painting or outlining demonstrated the weaving together of the artists' aspiration, expertise, and dedication.
